Posit Science and collaborating academic institutions have completed multiple studies to evaluate the efficacy of the Brain Fitness Program.

Improvements in Memory Using the Brain Fitness ProgramAcross these studies, the results indicate that participants training with the Brain Fitness Program:

  • Show statistically significant improvements on the RBANS*, a standardized clinical assessment of memory and cognition.
  • Demonstrate an equivalent of 10+ years of improvement in memory and cognition on these standardized assessments.
  • Report cognitive gains that lead to quality of life benefits, including heightened alertness, deeper engagement, a better ability to follow conversation, and a greater sense of control over their lives.

Changes in Memory Using the Brain Fitness Program

Posit Science has completed multiple randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving over one thousand study participants. In all of these studies, participants’ initial results on standardized clinical assessments of memory and cognition are compared with their results on the same assessments at the end of the study. This comparison is done so that scientists and clinicians understand the magnitude of the effect that training with the Brain Fitness Program has on various aspects of memory.

182 adults aged 60 and older participated in our most recent Brain Fitness study. The experimental group used the Brain Fitness Program on computers in their home for 8 to 10 weeks, the active control group watched educational DVDs on a computer for the duration of the study and a no-contact control group simply took a pre and post study assessment. Individuals in the Brain Fitness Program training group demonstrated a statistically significant improvement (p<.05) on standardized clinical assessments of memory and cognition. This means that the statistically significant improvements we see are real at a 95% confidence level and are not due to chance.

The control groups’ change in performance on the assessments was not statistically significant in any of the studies we have conducted to date.

Mild Cognitive Impairment and the Brain Fitness Program

Our partners at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), Stanford University, and the University of California at Davis conducted a pilot study of the effects of the Brain Fitness Program on people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Although the first pilot study with a small number of MCI patients showed very promising results, further research is required. We will share results as soon as they are available.
